BetterBite is an AI-assisted nutrition and food-tracking application built by Lior Amsellem. A user photographs a meal or scans a barcode and the app logs it with calories and macronutrients; recipes, meal plans, an AI coach and weekly insights sit around that core. The stated goal is to make food tracking and nutrition management accessible and convenient enough that people keep doing it.[1]
Features
- Calorie tracking — a daily target derived from the user's goals, with the day's remaining calories visible on the home screen.
- Macronutrients — protein, carbohydrates and fat per item and per day.
- Food logging — by photo (AI identification), by barcode, by voice, or from a food database; restaurant-chain menus for common chains.
- AI-assisted nutrition features — photo analysis, a conversational coach, and weekly insights that read the user's own numbers.
- Personalised meal ideas, recipes and meal planning — a library of several hundred recipes with per-serving macros and steps, filtered by goal, time and diet, and assembled into weekly plans.
- Wearables — WHOOP and Oura data alongside food, where connected.
Food data
The app's database layers a curated recipe set, a large branded-food dataset derived from USDA data (with barcodes), and restaurant-chain menu data. Photo analysis runs through a server-side proxy so that no AI provider key lives on the device. The back end runs on Cloudflare Workers with a managed Postgres database.[2]
Pricing model
BetterBite is free to use, including scanning. A Pro tier covers meal plans, the AI coach and weekly insights. By design there is no paywall on launch and no interruption: the upgrade screen is reached only when a user taps a Pro feature. Prices are shown in the app.
History
The app launched on the App Store as Bite AI and was renamed BetterBite. Through 2026 it moved through several pricing models — a hard paywall, a trial-first model with a limited free tier, a fully free period — before settling on the current quiet-freemium model. Those experiments, and the short-form video marketing around the app, are part of why Amsellem keeps a consumer product alongside the business software.
Scope and claims
BetterBite is a tracking and planning tool for everyday eating; it is not a medical device and does not give medical advice.
